"I lose my temper a lot and hate when things don't go my way."
Why do we sometimes feel like we can't control our intense emotions? Have you ever wondered where your feelings of anger come from?
Tanvi discusses these topics and more with Preethi, on this podcast episode of 'Rediscovering Self with Amrutam'. Tune in to know more about the different types of anger, its triggers and what we can be more cognizant of when it comes to responding this emotion.
Our notes from the episode:
All emotions have a purpose, intended to help us achieve a goal. If we experience an emotion it means there is some information that we can gain from it.
We may be angry at ourselves for not meeting our expectations or at others for not doing what we believe they should have done. When we experience anger towards others, it's usually because we are putting our values onto someone else or when we feel certain scenarios must go in a certain way.
Expressing emotions in seemingly extreme ways or very frequently experiencing an emotion could be a sign of something needing looking into. To manage our reaction, it is important to let ourselves acknowledge that we're feeling something and give ourselves time to choose how we respond.
Although it is not often spoken about, we could see anxiety or depression present itself as irritability or anger. We could either be displacing our emotions on someone or something else or may be using this reaction as a defense mechanism.
In situations where we want to control our anger reaction, a good starting point is to try to identify the physiological messages our bodies are sending us, whether it be the face getting hot, muscles contracting, etc. Once we acknowledge what we're feeling we give ourselves the opportunity to choose how we want to react.
The other person who may incite our reaction is acting upon their values and on what they believe they should do, based on their own understanding of the same situation. When we are able to start looking at events in this way, it helps the anger soften.
